Zombies

Zombies can spawn wielding weapons/tools and/or wearing armor, and helmets will prevent them from burning in daylight. In an older version of the game, zombies stuck in cobwebs would not burn in daylight and baby zombies were immune to daylight.

A zombie wielding a shovel joins in on a village siege.

Any light level below seven is dark enough for zombies to spawn.

Zombies were the second mob added to Minecraft, added after the now-removed Human mob.

When the Enderman was first added, it made zombie sounds until its own sound effects were ready.

Zombies have an 80 percent chance of spawning as husks when they spawn in desert biomes. When their heads are submerged in water for at least 30 seconds, husks will shake vigorously and turn into zombies; the same process will turn regular zombies into drowneds.

Husks are more commonly seen in deserts than other zombie variants are.

Until a Beta update, zombies only dropped feathers.

While most hostile mobs must be within 16 blocks to track the player, zombies can track the player from up to 42 blocks away. However, wearing a zombie head will cut the proximity for tracking in half; zombie heads can be obtained from zombies killed by charged creepers.

When an explosion from a charged creeper kills a zombie…
… a zombie head may be dropped.

In Bedrock Edition, baby zombies can ride stray cats and pandas.

When the game is set to Hard difficulty, zombies have a small chance of spawning as reinforcements for zombified piglins in the Nether.

Zombies will attack baby turtles and turtle eggs.

A pair of zombies jump on turtle eggs until the eggs break.

Hitting a zombie will attract more zombies.

In 2013, a brief feature allowed zombies near death to deal increased damage to the player; it was later removed.

When large groups of zombies attack a village at night, it is known as a siege. In harder difficulty levels, zombies are capable of fully breaking down wooden doors during sieges.

Baby zombies target a villager at their first siege.

Baby zombies have more health points and are 50 percent faster than their adult variants.

Baby zombies can run quickly, while adult zombies can only walk.

Healing potions deal damage to zombies (and other undead mobs) while harming potions will restore their health.

To cure a zombie villager, apply a splash potion of weakness and give it a golden apple. After three to five minutes, it will turn back into a villager; the villager will then raise the player’s reputation in its village of origin.

A baby villager has been turned into a baby zombie villager.

Baby zombies atop chickens are known as chicken jockeys, which are extremely rare.

A chicken jockey is ready to take on the night.

Ghasts

The nine tentacles seen on the ghast are not part of the hitbox; in other words, they will not receive damage.

Ghasts do not chase players. Rather, they shoot fireballs while flying backward from the player.

The ghast sound effect is a recording of Daniel Rosenfeld’s (music/audio composer for the game) cat. An unused sound file for the ghast is named affectionate_scream.ogg.

Players can earn the Return to Sender advancement via returning fireballs to the ghast, which can be done with swords, arrows, or even the player’s own fists.

This advancement can only be achieved by returning a fireball to the ghast that shot it.

Nether portals can be reactivated if a ghast shoots a fireball into the portal. However, ghasts can also destroy Nether portals by shooting into active ones.

Ghasts can make or break Nether portals.

A returned fireball will immediately kill the ghast despite how much health it may have.

Any block with a blast resistance of 26 or higher cannot be destroyed by fireballs, though cobblestone can weaken and eventually be destroyed.

Ghasts can shoot fireballs every three seconds when hostile, but will not shoot if the player is not directly visible.

An aggravated ghast…
… shoots fireballs at the player.

The original fireball texture was a snowball on fire. In a later snapshot, the texture appeared as a diamond helmet on fire.

The ghast sound effects can be heard from up to 80 blocks away.

Bonus Fact

On Halloween, zombies, skeletons, wither skeletons, zombified piglins, and creepers can spawn wearing pumpkins, carved pumpkins, or jack o’ lanterns.
