In the age of the  Marvel cinematic universe, it is hard for many other superhero movies to break through to mass success. However, on April 5 a new superhero film zipped to the silver screen and into our hearts. While the movie does not have (or need) the gritty darkness and angst accompanied by most superhero franchises, the new film Shazam! makes us feel warm and fuzzy without remorse. It is breezy, light and does not take itself too seriously.

This powerhouse cast, led by Zachary Levi who was casted perfectly in his ability to to be a realistic overgrown kid, takes you through every know emotion without stressing one or the other too deeply.  The actors, mostly teenagers, portrayed their characters with elements that don’t get seen too much in traditional superhero films. They were angry at their circumstances yet vigilant and caring for others. They were refreshingly…human. They were selfish in a way we never see with Captain America and similar characters who are heroically moral without a second thought.

The plot had excellent pacing. We start with a backstory for the villain, showing his ‘unworthiness’ and lack of support from his family. Flashforward 40 or so years and we meet Billy. He’s a bitter cynical foster kid bent on finding his mom whom he lost in the crowd at the county fair. Billy is placed in a foster home with parents who were once foster kids themselves. The other kids all have endearing personality quirks that make it truly feel like a home.

After defending his younger foster brother from bullies, Billy runs on the subway and is magically transported to the lair of Shazam. The old wizard tells him that he needs a champion to take over his powers to protect the world from the seven deadly sins. All Billy has to do is say the magic word: Shazam! The name Shazam is an acronym of six celebrated Greek legends which lend their talents to the power: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. Billy’s powers turn him into a man about 30. He uses this to his advantage to sign him and his brother out and buy things he couldn’t normally buy. Billy gets caught up in the show-biz of it all and doesn’t realize the threat of the villain until he begins to attack his family.

This movie will do many things to your emotions. It will have you rolling with laughter and make you realize how important family is. Do not miss it in a theater near you!
